Research
Juan Sastre was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1963. He graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Valencia, and obtained his PhD in 1989 doing a Doctoral Thesis on oxidative stress and aging of the liver supervised by Prof. José Viña and Prof. Federico V. Pallardó. After staying in the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (Boston, USA), King's College London (UK), and Unité INSERM 99 at the Hôpital Henri Mondor (France), he returned to the Department of Physiology of the University of Valencia to work first as Assistant Professor and later as Titular Professor. He has teaching experience in Human Physiology from 1987, in Human Pathophysiology from 1998, and in Hematology from 2003 to date.
Juan Sastre is Full Professor of Physiology at the University of Valencia since 2006 and his research work focuses on the role of oxidative stress and redox signaling in Gastroenterology, particularly in acute pancreatitis. He has published 156 international articles on oxidative stress, glutathione, antioxidants, mitochondria, aging, apoptosis, cytokines, protein phosphatases, redox signaling, histone acetylation, acute pancreatitis, secondary biliary cirrhosis, and alcohol liver disease. His publications in Physiological Reviews (1), J. Clin Inv (1), JAMA (2), Hepatology (5), Gut (2), EMBO J. (1), Nature Comm. (1), Redox Biology (8), FRBM (10), Antioxidant Redox Signaling (5), Diabetes (1), FASEB J (3), Am J. Clin. Nutr. (3), Am J Physiol (3), Biochem J (3), J. Immunol (1) and J. Biol. Chem (2) should be highlighted. His H index is 59, with more than 12.600 total citations. Remarkably, 7 of his publications have received > 300 citations, and 34 > 100 citations. The average citation per article is 80. During the last 10 years, he has published 15 international articles as corresponding author (14 Q1; 93%). He has supervised 16 PhD.
Prof. Sastre has obtained different awards for his research work: “Basic Science Award 2025” given by the Society for Free Radical Research-Europe (SFRR-E) for his outstanding contributions to research in the redox field; “Catherine Pasquier Memorial Award 2005” given by SFRR-E for his relevant scientific achievements in the area of free radical research; “Harwood Young Investigator Award” for free radical research 1998, given by SFRR-E; and “García Blanco” medal in 1992 given to young researchers in Biomedicine by the School of Medicine of Valencia (Spain). Juan Sastre was President of the Spanish Group for Free Radical Research (GEIRLI) from 2010 till 2015; General Secretary of SFRR-Europe from 2013 till 2020; President of SFRR-E from 2023 till 2024; and currently he is Past-President of SFRR-E.
